Mercyhealth prides itself on providing training programs and courses to members of the fire department, law enforcement, EMS, and other medical personnel, as well as the public. All courses are taught in our 25,000-square-foot Tactical Training Center in Janesville, WI. The Center offers multiple scenarios–classrooms, nightclub, office and emergency department, as well as state-of-the-art simulation labs and well-trained, certified instructors and simulation staff.

This course is designed for health care providers who have a duty to respond to an emergency. Must hold a current BLS card.

Mercyhealth's Heartsaver CPR First Aid courses are offered primarily to businesses or those whose position requires them to respond to a medical emergency. Core elements of this course include learning CPR, AED, choking techniques (Heimlich maneuver), barrier devices, and first aid for acute injuries and sudden illness.

Upon successful completion of this course, a course completion card will be issued.

This course is designed for health care providers who support the medical staff in areas of cardiac and respiratory emergencies. In this course, participants will learn Adult/infant/child CPR, barrier techniques, airway and AED.

*A card is issued upon successful completion of this course. The course completion card is valid for two years.*

CPR for family and friends Mercyhealth's free Community CPR course is offered to anyone who wants to learn how to recognize and respond to life threatening emergencies. This course is designed for non-health care providers, this course focuses on adult/child/infant CPR and choking techniques (Heimlich maneuver), first aid and child safety checklist.

*Card of attendance will be located in the book. This is a non-certification course.*

This course is designed for lay providers who need IDPH certification for providing daycare services. In this course, participants will learn how to perform CPR, AED, and choking techniques (Heimlich maneuver), as well as use barrier devices and apply first aid for acute injuries and sudden illness.

Designed as an entry-level course for the emergency medical responder/defibrillator certified, the objective of this course is to teach uniform assessment, management and stabilizing skills for injured or ill patients by using basic medical and trauma life support skills.

During the course, emphasis is placed on recognizing critical situations that cannot be managed definitively in the prehospital setting.

This course follows the most current National Emergency Medical Responder/Defibrillation DOT curriculum and is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

This course is designed to train police, fire, rescue personnel and persons interested in the techniques of prehospital emergency care. The curriculum, developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, prepares students for the National Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification examination.

Prerequisites

Students are required to pass written, computer and practical skills examinations and participate in ambulance, hospital and clinical experiences to become eligible to sit for the National Registry examination.

MercyHealth's new 25,000-square-foot Tactical Training Center expands the breadth and scope of the education offered at the adjacent Mercyhealth Emergency Medical Services Training Center (MREMS). With state-of-the-art simulation labs and well-trained, DOJ-certified instructors and simulation staff, we offer valuable tactical training not seen before in this region.

In the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ position paper on active shooter, the author remarks that, "It is imperative that local fire and law enforcement agencies have common tactics, common communications capabilities and a common lexicon for seamless, effective operations."

In other words, the gap between law enforcement and EMS/FD operations must close. The Tactical Training Center offers participants the opportunity to do just that—close the gap to provide better and more effective integrated care.

Facility rentals

our 25,000-square-foot center includes a variety of scenarios for law enforcement, fire and EMS training—emergency department, office, movie theater, school, drug house and church.

The facility is available for rental by federal, state and local public safety agencies and programs. A signed Use Agreement and Facility Application must be completed before confirming rental.

This course will instruct students on how to save lives during an active shooter event and other mass casualty incidents. Topics include bleeding control, airway management, treatment of chest wounds, hypothermia prevention, casualty triage, creation of casualty collection points, introduction to the rescue task force concept, and techniques for extracting the injured. This course includes classroom instruction, hands-on practical exercises with medical adjuncts and high-fidelity mannequins.

Audience: Current law enforcement, EMS or fire professional

The curriculum provides the student with information about the recognition, assessment, and management of acute and chronic changes in physiology; presenting physical signs and symptoms of illness and injury; emotional and psychological symptoms or reactions to the stress of acute illness or injury; and psychomotor, psychosocial, and psychosexual growth and development as it pertains to the pre-hospital care of the neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

In addition, the curriculum covers the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities that paramedics assume as students and later as practitioners, plus radio principles and protocols for communicating.

In laboratory sessions, students learn to assess a patient and utilize clinical and critical thinking skills to properly manage care of the patient in the pre-hospital setting.

During the clinical and field internship portions of the program, students are allowed to apply learned theory and clinical skills while under the direct observation and guidance of a preceptor.

Students will have a terminal competency assessment conducted near the conclusion of the course to evaluate their overall performance.

The Janesville and Rockford paramedic programs meet the requirements for education of paramedics as recommended by the U.S. Department of Transportation, required, and approved by the State of Wisconsin DHS 110, and Illinois Department of Public Health.

Upon completion of the classroom lectures, demonstration/return demonstration labs, independent readings, hospital-based clinical rotations, supervised field internship and course exams, the paramedic graduate will be able to demonstrate competency and mastery in terminal competencies outlined in the Program Summative Assessment.

This course incorporates lectures, practice and scenario-based training. Participants learn foundation principles, practices and skills necessary for providing medical support to law enforcement operations. Emphasis is on medical models and skills effective for supporting special operations teams during high-risk, large-scale and extended operations. Concepts and skills taught are also relevant to all law enforcement operations..

This course is a full-day event that addresses topics and issues of importance to the canine handler and EMS providers when caring for K9 officers. Normal physical examination parameters and trauma logistics are reviewed, along with recognition of a variety of medical and surgical conditions. For each situation, appropriate basic first aid techniques are discussed. All participants receive a notebook containing relevant course information for note-taking and future reference.

Workplace Casualty Care Program

Workplace Casualty Care is 1 hour of professional hands-on training offered on-site at your organization. Employees will learn to apply lifesaving bleeding control skills including the use of tourniquets, wound packing and pressure bandages in the event of an incident of workplace violence, tornado, explosion or other calamity.

RTF is an aggressive response to an active shooter incident that provides rapid medical treatment at the point of injury to those who are injured. It is a joint response between police and fire/EMS departments, but can be adapted to any agency, large or small, rural or urban. This training is ideal for front line EMS personnel and law enforcement officers. With basic understanding of language, roles and movements, trained persons will finish the class with a functional understanding and ability to perform this task.

Length: 4 hours (lecture only); 8 hours (lecture and hands on)

This course is designed for all outdoor enthusiasts to develop the skills and tools necessary to survive when tragedy strikes.Instructors will provide 45 minutes of instruction relating to the skills needed to survive. All class participants will then get hands-on instruction before they perform and demonstrate proficiency with all skills taught.
