Potential danger is everywhere. Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region Caswell County EMS full time and part time staff is equipped with level 4 ballistics vests. The $12,000 grant pays for 33 vests at a general cost of $380 apiece. The vests have a ten-year life expectancy. Any damaged by gunfire or knives will need to be immediately taken out of action and replaced.

Supervisor Chris Crockett explains, "We go out to calls with injuries that may be at a shooting, on the scene with an active shooter, and domestic violence. These vests will add an extra layer of protection to measures we already have in place. They will be worn at any high risk for violence."

Crockett says it is quite common to receive calls with threats of violence. "Now that we have the vests, it's easier for us to go along with law enforcers to treat victims quicker."

EMS also wears protective gear for COVID-19 when advisable on medical calls.

Applying for grants is a routine method for obtaining additional funding. Caswell County provides the primary funding.

Next up will be looking at grant opportunities for Special Operations Rescue Team gear.

Crockett explains that calls are increasing every year. "Last year we ran 4,000 calls and that will probably go up to 4,500 this year. We have an aging population that fuels the increase. Unfortunately, a number of people are using emergency rooms like a doctor's office. Some people also believe they can get in quicker in ER if they come in on an ambulance. That's not necessarily true. The patient is assessed when they get there. Conditions that are not critical have to wait like everyone else."

He points out that the casino in Danville Virginia will add to more traffic and development along 86, so that will generate additional calls for medical assistance.
