This Is Sophie Hermann’s Favourite Workout Class
Made In Chelsea's Sophie Hermann swears by an exercise class that promises to give you the benefits of a two-hour workout in just a fraction of the time. Intrigued? Read on.
Electrical muscle stimulation - also known as EMS - is a full body workout targeting multiple muscle groups simultaneously. E-pulsive, which offers the sessions at Repose wellness space in London, claim that a traditional workout may only use 50% of your muscles, whereas EMS manages to engage up to 98%.
‘Repose is amazing,’ Sophie tells Grazia, ‘I do aerial yoga in there too, but it's mainly the EMS training because it's super quick, it's 20 minutes. But it's equal to two hours of workout which is right up my street, because I really can't be bothered to do a long workout'.
OK, so you have Sophie's seal of approval. But there is a little bit of a catch as to why the workout is so effective. You have to wear a suit, covered in electrodes, which sends currents through your body as you exercise. As Sophie explains, this is beneficial because, 'movement gets intensified with the high electric impulses', hence why you need less time to complete your workout.
Sophie has been working out using EMS since 2014. And now the reality star lives by the workout so much, she has her own personalised suit at the gym. But Sophie isn't the only EMS training devotee, either, with Poppy Delvinge and Amelia Windsor also being high-profile fans.
Sceptical? It's proven to be safe, Grazia even trialled the workout just to make sure. The suit looks like a lifejacket and it's an odd item to wear while exercising, but the shocks are nowhere near as intense as you might expect - they just take a bit of getting used to. Grazia was accompanied by trainer Nathalia and the workout itself was actually enjoyable. The exercises aren't too strenuous - think squats, crunches, bicep curls - you can definitely feel it the next day - that's when it really does feel like you've been training for more than than 20 minutes.
If you’re interested to give EMS training a go yourself, trial sessions at E-pulsive{:rel=nofollow} start at £20.
