EAST PALESTINE — Firefighters, EMS workers, and other first responders now have an online resource that gives them instant access to information on hazardous material training available throughout the state.

The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal, in partnership with the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, PUCO, and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, developed a new website that compiles all known first responder training in Ohio.

This resource was developed in response to the East Palestine train derailment to ensure a singular depository for hazmat courses that train firefighters in responding to train derailments and other emergencies. The trainings are free to first responders through state agencies and industry partners. Some coursework is online.

Track-Area Clean Up Progress

Excavation of impacted sediment and soil along North Ditch west of Pleasant Drive is underway. Track cleanup of the few remaining grids also is underway. Ohio EPA, US EPA and Norfolk Southern continue to finalize the site-wide investigation plan. Controlled washing of a few remaining areas of impacted sediment in Sulphur Run and Leslie Run will resume next week.

Hazardous Waste Removal

According to Ohio EPA, approximately 20 million gallons of liquid wastewater have been hauled out of East Palestine in total. There is currently a pile of approximately 16,500 tons of excavated soil waiting for removal from East Palestine, versus 57,200 tons that have been removed.

East Palestine Municipal Drinking Water

Drinking water sampling results from the East Palestine Municipal Water System continue to show no indication of contaminants associated with the derailment. The public water system continues to meet all state and federal standards for safe drinking water. Sentinel and monitoring well sampling also show no indication that chemicals associated with the derailment are moving toward the East Palestine well field.

Private Well Testing

The Ohio Department of Health, working with the Columbiana County Health District, has received verified laboratory results from 14 additional samples from private water systems since last Friday. None of them showed detectable contaminants. In total, test results from 457 samples have been verified.
