Muncie (IN) Fire/EMS Members Accused of Cheating on Exams

Mar 27, 2023

Several investigations are underway at an Indiana fire department over allegations of systemic cheating on National Registry certification and fire exams, according to WTHR.

Muncie Fire Chief Robert Mead told the station some firefighters and EMTs are accused of being given actual test questions and answers prior to or during their exams.

Mead said he learned of the investigation last month.

"This upsets me greatly that some individuals could or did possibly cheat because we have a lot of good people, and by proxy all of us have to pay for this," Mead said, according to the report.

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) said it is taking the investigation seriously.

"Protecting the public is paramount, and we began investigating these allegations as soon as they were brought to our attention," said Bill Seifarth, CEO and executive director of the National Registry. "We want to ensure that EMS candidates have fairly taken their certification examinations and that their individual knowledge and skills are appropriately measured."

In addition to the NREMT's investigation, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security has launched two separate investigations.

The office of the Indiana State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation over allegations of on state firefighter exams
