STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An apparent head-on collision involving an FDNY vehicle and a sedan in Castleton Corners Monday afternoon sparked a large emergency response.
According to the FDNY, they received reports of an unconscious person in the crash at Slosson Avenue near Reon Avenue just after 1:30 p.m.
Two people were involved in the collision; one person was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton and the other declined treatment at the scene, according to the FDNY.
Further details on the patient's condition were not immediately available.
The collision involved a department maintenance vehicle that does not have a 911 emergency response role, the FDNY official said.
Both vehicles could be seen with significant front-end damage.
The front end of the gray sedan was totally destroyed. The grill was detached and the hood of the vehicle was bent in a curvature exposing the engine block. The windshield of the sedan also was shattered in the impact.
The FDNY maintenance vehicle's engine block was left exposed and the front bumper of the vehicle was destroyed.
Further information will be posted as it becomes available.
