Tom Holland Has Revealed What He Hated about Training for Spider

Oct 03, 2023

"You basically do a yoga class while they electrocute you," he said. "It's awful"

Like the majority of Hollywood's acting elite, Tom Holland isn't shy about putting in the hard yards for an upcoming role – as his recent transformation for upcoming flick Spider-Man: No Way Home attests.

Appearing recently on The Graham Norton Show alongside Mark Wahlberg and Sienna Miller, Holland opened up about the unusual training method he deployed to get his body in peak condition for the third Peter Parker solo movie.

"Have you ever heard of EMS training?" he says. "You wear this black suit and they put these pads on you and you basically do a yoga class while they electrocute you. It's awful."

"It's like muscle stimulation?' asks Wahlberg. "Yeah, it's like muscle stimulation, but you workout while you use it," replies Holland.

If you're unfamiliar with the principles of EMS – which stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation – the process essentially involves donning a body suit that fires electrical impulses into the body, causing your muscles to contract. (continued below)

It's billed as "low-impact high-intensity strength training", with each EMS workout lasting around 20 minutes or so. That's clearly 20 minutes too long, as far as Holland is concerned.

"I basically cheated," he continues. "I did it with my best friend and every time the trainer would go to the bathroom one of us would crank up the machine that my friend was using.

"You genuinely can't move, it makes every part of your body shake and it's awful," he laughs. "It's a lot of fun and it works but it really is the worst thing I've ever done."

Mild, controlled electrocution doesn't typically feature on our training plan, we'll be honest. But if that's what it takes for Holland to hone his Spidey senses, we're all for it.
